A short video introduction from New Harbinger Publications to The Mental Health Guide for Cis and Trans Queer Guys (2025). Rahim explains that he wrote the book as a queer man himself, motivated by navigating both the mainstream world and queer men’s subcultures. Cis and trans queer guys, he notes, face experiences their straight and cisgender counterparts do not, from coming out and gender exploration to a distinct relationship with sexual health and subcultures where body image and substance use take on their own meaning.
Taking a social determinants of health perspective, each chapter addresses one factor, such as internalized shame, aging, substance use or disenfranchised grief. The book draws on cognitive behavioural therapy, gestalt role play and psychoanalytic thinking, offering linear exercises, somatic and role-play work, and “digging deeper” questions readers can bring to therapy as a companion guide.
