Gender-affirming care within your role

You already use mental health skills that can matter in gender-affirming care. Like learning about eating disorders, bariatric surgery, HIV, oncology, or Alzheimer’s disease, learning about medical options can help you explain information, prepare questions, and coordinate support while keeping your professional role clear.

Clients define their gender. Your work can offer a safe space to explore social and medical transition, including uncertainty, changing preferences, and decisions to pause. When assessment or endorsement is required, assess and support the relevant intervention-specific domains within your role. Explain applicable clinical, diagnostic, and eligibility requirements without turning identity into a test of legitimacy.
