In this keynote for the Pennsylvania LGBTQIA Health Summit, Rahim offers a framework for understanding LGBTQIA+ mental health through adapted social determinants.
Diagnostic labels such as depression may be the same across populations, but their drivers and expressions are shaped by LGBTQIA+ subcultural and systemic contexts. Rahim describes key determinants, including coming out, internalized shame, community body image pressures, substance use norms and “milestone heteronormativity”, and argues for care that looks past individual pathology to the collective, politicized experiences behind distress. The recording also includes a community discussion, moderated by Dr. Tyler Titus of Compton's Table, on turning data into action.
