Drawing on a wide range of voices, the book moves from early pioneers to the parades, pride and politics of today, with chapters on early cruising areas and bars, queer shared houses, bathhouse raids, conflicts with police, community archiving, and Jackie Shane, the trans R&B singer whose 1962 single gave the book its title.
Rahim was one of the book’s co-editors. He also contributed the essay “Cardio-Highs: Winning and Running Away All at Once” and co-wrote the book’s conclusion, “Did Toronto Get Queer?”, with Tatum Taylor.
